Review | Cathay Pacific The Deck Lounge Hong Kong

The Deck, a Cathay Pacific Business Lounge located at Hong Kong International Airport, offers a relatively accessible retreat situated at the terminal’s northernmost point.

During my five-hour layover, my time at The Deck was brief compared to other lounges, as its offerings are reminiscent of Cathay Pacific’s facilities at both Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport and Singapore’s Changi Terminal 4, with which I am well-acquainted.

For a more exceptional experience, I recommend a short three-minute stroll to the superior Qantas Hong Kong Lounge, also conveniently located within the airport.

Lounge Location

Unlike the bustling central concourse and retail areas, The Deck is set back, positioned slightly beyond the Qantas Hong Kong Lounge on the same level.

Despite their proximity, there is no direct passage between The Deck and the Qantas Lounge; visitors must descend to the main terminal level and navigate towards Gate 6.

Entry Requirements

In terms of entry requirements, The Deck operates primarily as a Business Class lounge, welcoming all Oneworld Sapphire frequent flyers, including Enrich Gold members. This accessibility mirrors that of the nearby Qantas Hong Kong Lounge, which I regard as a superior option.

Notably, during my visit, I observed that The Deck was considerably more crowded than the Qantas Hong Kong Lounge, an unexpected finding given their adjacent locations.

Lounge Space

As is typical with Cathay Pacific Business Class lounges, The Deck features a substantial dining area anchored by Cathay Pacific's acclaimed Noodle Bar and a modest self-serve buffet.

A standout feature, The Terrace, which is prominently featured on Cathay Pacific’s website, affords panoramic views of the apron.

However, I found the vistas from the Qantas Hong Kong Lounge to be superior. During my visit, The Terrace had ample seating available, in contrast to the fully occupied indoor Dining Area.

This preference for the traditional restaurant-style seating near the food services over the appealing Terrace space was intriguing. The Terrace also includes a cozy section known as The Sunset Bar, offering a selection of liquors.

The overall lounge space, while familiar to those acquainted with other Cathay Pacific lounges, is relatively compact compared to other lounges at Hong Kong International Airport.

Notably, The Wing Business Class Lounge is approximately three times larger than The Deck. Given its smaller size, The Deck likely serves primarily passengers with departures from nearby gates, especially considering that The Wing Business Class Lounge and The Pier Business Class Lounge are a 10-15 minute and at least a 20-minute walk away, respectively, without the use of the automated people mover.

Showers

The Deck, consistent with other Cathay Pacific lounges at Hong Kong International Airport, features shower facilities. I was particularly impressed by the shower reception staff, who were notably friendly and proactive in encouraging use of the showers.

Remarkably, the shower suites were available during my visit, despite the lounge operating at full capacity. Having already freshened up at The Wing First Class Lounge, I chose instead to tour the shower suites to provide a detailed account.

The showers at The Deck are notably spacious, equipped with ample room and even a luggage rack, enhancing convenience for travelers.

Final Thoughts

Overall, The Deck lounge offers a convenient and satisfactory stopover, particularly for those looking to grab a quick bite before boarding flights at nearby gates. If you are departing from Gates 5-9, The Deck is ideally located for ease of access.

However, for travelers departing from Gates 1-4 or Gates 23-30, a visit to the Qantas Hong Kong Lounge is highly recommended for its superior amenities. Additionally, The Wing Business Class Lounge, situated above Gates 3 and 4, is another viable option, though it tends to be the most crowded of the three lounges.
