Public Bank has announced significant changes to their lounge access privileges for credit card holders.
Effective from August 1, 2024, the previously complimentary access to Plaza Premium Lounges in Malaysia will now come with specific spending conditions.
What’s Changing?
Previously, cardholders of Public Bank’s credit cards enjoyed complimentary 3X access per annum to participating Plaza Premium lounges in Malaysia. This benefit was a significant perk, given that the Public Bank World Mastercard was free-for-life without conditions.
However, starting August 1, 2024, this access will no longer be complimentary. Instead, cardholders will need to meet certain spending requirements to avail themselves of the lounge access.
Details of the New Spend Conditions
For Public Bank World Mastercard cardholders, which is the only airline miles credit card in Public Bank's lineup, the new terms dictate that cardholders must spend a minimum of RM1,000 within 30 calendar days before and/or after each lounge visit to qualify for the access.
The access remains capped at 3X per annum, and this limit is shared between the principal and supplementary cardholders. This change aligns with a trend seen in the industry where banks are imposing spend conditions to justify the benefits provided.
The introduction of these spend conditions is a significant shift from the previous policy of complimentary access. While this may seem like a drawback at first glance, it is important to note that the new structure is quite reasonable compared to other banks.
For instance, some banks require the spending condition to be fulfilled before the lounge visit, which can be particularly inconvenient for new cardholders. In contrast, Public Bank’s approach of allowing the spend to occur within 30 days before or after the lounge access is more logical and user-friendly.
Updated Ultimate Airport Lounge Guide
In light of these changes, my Ultimate Airport Lounge Guide has been updated to reflect the new terms for the Public Bank World Mastercard.
The implementation of spend conditions similar to AmBank’s policy is a step in the right direction. AmBank requires a minimum spend within a certain period to qualify for lounge access, which is a fair method to ensure card usage.
The flexibility offered by Public Bank, allowing the spend to be made before or after the lounge visit, provides a more practical solution for cardholders, particularly those new to the card who might not have a spending history yet.

Final Thoughts
The revision of lounge access privileges by Public Bank marks a significant change in their credit card benefits structure. While the end of complimentary access is disappointing, the introduction of a spend condition is a reasonable compromise that ensures continued access for active cardholders.
The approach taken by Public Bank is logical and user-friendly, and when compared to other banks' policies, it stands out as a practical and fair implementation. Not to mention, the changes will likely help ease the congestion at Plaza Premium Lounges in Malaysia.
For those holding the Public Bank World Mastercard, it’s important to adapt to these changes and plan your spending accordingly to continue enjoying the lounge benefits.
