AmBank has recently announced a revision to the local Miles Per Ringgit (MPR) rates for its newly launched Enrich Visa Infinite and Visa Platinum credit cards.
This adjustment follows the redemption of 43 million Enrich Points, as stipulated in the original terms. At the time of the cards’ introduction, AmBank clarified that the attractive local earn rates of 0.5 MPR for the Visa Infinite and 0.25 MPR for the Visa Platinum were temporary.
These rates were to be revised either when the 43 million Enrich Points cap was reached or by 30 June 2025—whichever came first. As anticipated, the cap has been reached much sooner than expected, confirming predictions I shared in my previous article.
What Are the New MPR Rates?
Effective from 1 October 2024, the new local earn rates will be 0.25 MPR for the AmBank Enrich Visa Infinite and 0.20 MPR for the Enrich Visa Platinum.
These revisions place AmBank’s Enrich cards among the least competitive in terms of local spend earn rates, especially considering the absence of bonus categories or enhanced earn rates for specific types of spending.
In contrast, I’ve previously advised readers to prioritize the Alliance Bank Visa Infinite and Visa Platinum cards for local spending. Even without the cap being reached, these cards offer a more lucrative proposition for earning Enrich Miles. While rumors of a forthcoming devaluation of the Alliance Bank cards persist, as of now, they remain the better option for maximizing your Enrich Miles on local transactions.
Looking more broadly at the market, the UOB Visa Infinite stands out as a superior alternative. With a 0.41 MPR on dining spend and the ability to convert your UNIRM points to multiple airlines—Enrich, KrisFlyer, or Asia Miles—it presents a much better value proposition than the AmBank Enrich Visa Infinite.
Malaysia Airlines’ recent operational challenges further weaken the appeal of being locked into their loyalty program, especially considering the limitations on redeeming Oneworld flights through Enrich Miles.
A Niche Offering, but Not for Everyone
While the AmBank Enrich Visa credit cards may appeal to a niche demographic within Malaysia, for most consumers, there are far better options available in the market. This is precisely why I’ve never recommended these cards, despite the relatively generous 1 MPR on overseas spend and the fast-track benefits to Enrich frequent flyer status.
From my perspective, none of these perks are worth the exclusivity to Malaysia Airlines Enrich, which is hampered by its limitations and poor regional reputation. An exception could be made for the AmBank Enrich Visa Platinum, given its RM0 annual fee, but even then, the drawbacks outweigh the benefits for most cardholders.
Final Thoughts
While AmBank’s Enrich Visa cards may suit those deeply loyal to Malaysia Airlines, the updated local earn rates significantly reduce their appeal.
For the general market, especially those looking to diversify their frequent flyer mile options, cards like the UOB Visa Infinite or the CIMB Visa Infinite remain far more attractive. As always, it's worth exploring alternatives that offer more flexibility and value, particularly for local spend.
