Review | Maybank Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer American Express® Platinum Credit Card

image.png

The Maybank Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer American Express Platinum has been a topic of considerable interest, particularly among those new to the pursuit of airline miles in 2024.

Many enthusiasts have pondered whether this card can replicate the success of its predecessor, the highly acclaimed Maybank 2 Cards Premier American Express Reserve. To a notable extent, it emerges as a compelling choice, particularly for a credit card with an annual income requirement of RM60,000.

This card is especially advantageous for Malaysians employed full-time in Singapore, a point I will delve into in greater detail throughout this review.

However, potential cardholders should be mindful of certain key factors, such as the acceptance of American Express cards among merchants in Malaysia, which can influence the overall utility and efficiency of accruing benefits from the card. In the ensuing sections, I'll unpack the value propositions of the Maybank Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer American Express Platinum, providing a thorough overview of its merits and limitations.

Air Miles Conversion

When assessing the local earning rates of the Maybank KrisFlyer Amex Platinum, it's prudent to compare it to other Malaysian credit cards that also allow conversion to KrisFlyer miles. The card offers a rate of 0.4 Miles per Ringgit (MPR), equivalent to 1 Airline Mile for every RM2.50 spent locally.

image.png

This positions the Maybank KrisFlyer Amex Platinum ahead of its competitors, including the RHB Premier Visa Infinite and the UOB Visa Infinite Metal credit cards, in terms of travel-branded offerings. Visit my KrisFlyer Ultimate Guide for more comparisons.

A significant challenge, however, is the lower acceptance rate of American Express in Malaysia. Due to the higher merchant fees associated with Amex, its uptake is notably lower compared to Visa and Mastercard. This limitation primarily affects those who frequent establishments where Amex is not widely accepted.

For cardholders who can regularly patronize high-end restaurants and international chains that accept Amex, this card could offer substantial value. Yet, this requires a spending pattern and income level that align with the card's potential benefits, emphasizing that engaging in this rewards program is not without its costs.

For online expenditures, the Maybank KrisFlyer Amex Platinum offers a favorable accrual rate of 0.5 MPR, or 1 KrisFlyer Mile for every RM2.00 spent, which is competitive within its income bracket. This feature is especially valuable considering the scarcity of cards around the RM60,000 annual income mark that provide enhanced points for online purchases.

By contrast, cards like the Alliance Bank Visa Infinite cater to a different frequent flyer program, offering miles at a rate of 1 Airline Mile = RM1.875 for Enrich Miles. However, given the higher valuation of KrisFlyer miles compared to Enrich miles, the slight difference in accrual rates may be considered negligible for those focused on accumulating KrisFlyer miles.

In summary, while the Maybank KrisFlyer Amex Platinum offers competitive mileage accrual rates, its effectiveness is contingent on one's ability to navigate the limited Amex acceptance in Malaysia and align spending habits to maximize the card's benefits.

When evaluating the overseas spending efficacy of the Maybank KrisFlyer Amex Platinum, the card provides a moderate airline miles accrual rate of 0.5 MPR, or 1 Airline Mile for every RM2.00 spent. This positions it comparably to high-tier cards such as the Standard Chartered Journey, which demands an annual income of RM90,000 but offers a similar MPR. This places the Maybank KrisFlyer Amex Platinum at a competitive advantage in its category, particularly for cardholders who primarily spend abroad.

However, there are certain nuances that potential cardholders must consider. American Express cards typically incur higher transaction fees on foreign purchases compared to their Mastercard and Visa counterparts. Given this, one might expect a more favorable mileage accrual rate to offset these fees, especially from a card bearing the prestigious American Express Platinum name.

This aspect is crucial for frequent overseas travelers or Malaysian expatriates in countries like Singapore, where Amex is more widely accepted than in Malaysia. In contrast, in Thailand, the acceptance of Amex is less widespread, which could diminish the card's effectiveness for users in that region.

Despite these challenges, it's important to recognize the strategic positioning of the Maybank KrisFlyer Amex Platinum within its market segment. The lack of robust competition within the same annual income bracket may contribute to the absence of a more aggressive mileage accrual strategy. This is a common trend seen across various card offerings, where the incentive to enhance benefits grows with the cardholder's income and spending capabilities.

For those considering moving into the RM100,000 annual income bracket, options expand significantly. Cards like the UOB PRVI Miles Elite, which operates on the Mastercard network, offer an impressive rate of 1.11 MPR, or 1 KrisFlyer Mile for every RM0.90 spent overseas. The decision to pursue such a card, potentially requiring a fixed deposit commitment, depends on individual financial circumstances and travel habits.

In conclusion, while the Maybank KrisFlyer Amex Platinum holds its own among cards designed for overseas spending, cardholders must weigh the higher transaction costs against the benefits of mileage accrual, especially when considering other cards available at higher income thresholds.

Special Deep Dive | Fast Track to KrisFlyer Elite Gold

One of the standout features of the Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer American Express® Platinum Credit Card is the Fast Track program to KrisFlyer Elite Gold status. This prestigious tier offers an array of benefits designed to enhance the travel experience significantly. Here, we explore the intricacies of this program and the stipulations for qualification.

The best part of this is that with KrisFlyer Elite Gold, you're also automatically a Star Alliance Gold member, with plenty of Star Alliance benefits such as:-
  • Priority airport check-in
  • Extra baggage allowance
  • Gold Track (Priority Security & Immigration)
  • Airport lounge access
  • Priority boarding
  • Priority baggage handling
  • Priority reservations waitlist
  • Priority airport stand-by
  • Complimentary upgrade to Business First Class on the Heathrow Express

Cardmembers can attain KrisFlyer Elite Gold status by charging a minimum of RM35,000 in card transactions related to the Singapore Airlines Group within their first year of membership. This spending must specifically be on Singapore Airlines, Scoot, and KrisShop online to be eligible.

Once the required spending threshold is reached, cardholders will be upgraded to the KrisFlyer Elite Gold membership tier within six weeks. It's important to note that this upgrade applies to members who are currently at the KrisFlyer Elite Silver level. However, those who already hold KrisFlyer Elite Gold status or are PPS Club members will not be eligible for this benefit under the Fast Track program.

Now, personally speaking, I'm more of a fan of the Oneworld Alliance, and it's commonly known amongst elite flyers that Oneworld Sapphire status (which is considered equivalent to Star Alliance Gold) has much better benefits, lounges, and perks all-round. Nevertheless, one cannot deny the allure of Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer Gold Lounge in Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 3.

Airport Lounge Access

The Maybank Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer American Express® Platinum Credit Card provides an attractive feature for travelers who value comfort during their journeys: generous lounge access. This card grants 5X annual entries to Plaza Premium Lounges worldwide, ensuring that cardholders can enjoy a peaceful and comfortable space to relax in before their flights across various global destinations.

image.png

The extensive network of Plaza Premium Lounges accessible through this card includes high-quality facilities, catering to travelers looking for a place to unwind. The inclusion of this benefit in a card designed for a RM60,000 annual income bracket is notable, especially when compared to other cards in the same segment. For example, the HSBC TravelOne Mastercard, while offering 6X access annually, restricts usage to regional lounges only, thereby limiting global travelers.

Interestingly, the lounge access provided by the Maybank KrisFlyer Amex Platinum aligns with what is offered by its higher-tier sibling, the Maybank 2 Cards Premier, which also allows for 5X access but commands a RM100,000 annual income. This parallel placement of benefits highlights the exceptional value the KrisFlyer Amex Platinum offers at its income level.

image.png

For cardholders who attain KrisFlyer Elite Gold or Star Alliance Gold status, the scope of lounge access expands dramatically. These prestigious statuses open the doors to over 1,000 Star Alliance Gold lounges globally, including some of the world's most acclaimed lounges such as the Lufthansa Senator Lounges in Germany and the Turkish Airlines lounge at Istanbul Airport. Additionally, travelers can enjoy the renowned KrisFlyer Gold Lounge at Singapore Changi Terminal 3, known for its exceptional amenities and service.

This extensive access not only enhances the travel experience through comfort and luxury but also positions the Maybank KrisFlyer Amex Platinum as a top choice for frequent flyers who prioritize lounge access as a part of their travel routine. The ability to access premium lounges globally ensures that cardholders can find a tranquil oasis even during the busiest travel schedules, making this card a key tool for both business and leisure travelers alike.

Final Thoughts

The Maybank Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer American Express Platinum Credit Card is a standout choice for those looking to accumulate airline miles and enjoy premium travel benefits.

With competitive earning rates for local and online spending, and additional perks like the Fast Track to KrisFlyer Elite Gold status, this card is particularly appealing for frequent travelers. Despite the limitations of American Express merchant acceptance in Malaysia, the benefits can outweigh the challenges for the right cardholder.

Moreover, the card's provision of 5X access to Plaza Premium lounges globally, enhanced by the extensive lounge network available through KrisFlyer Elite Gold and Star Alliance Gold statuses, makes it highly valuable for those who prioritize comfort and convenience while traveling.

For individuals who frequently travel or spend internationally, especially in regions with better Amex acceptance like Singapore, the Maybank KrisFlyer Amex Platinum remains a robust option within its income bracket.

I would classify this credit card as specifically targeted to the middle-income Malaysian that is only keen on accumulating KrisFlyer miles for redemption on Singapore Airlines and signature Star Alliance carriers such as EVA Air, Thai Airways and Turkish Airways.
