Review | CIMB Preferred Visa Infinite

image.png

The CIMB Preferred Visa Infinite represents the pinnacle of luxury that a relationship with CIMB offers.

With a minimum AUM requirement of RM250,000, this credit card certainly packs a punch in terms of airline miles accrual. We’ve observed several credit cards in the Priority Banking space offering subpar airline miles accrual rates, such as the Standard Chartered Priority Banking Visa Infinite. So, does the CIMB Preferred Visa Infinite fall into the same category, or does it stand out amongst its competitors?

Let’s dive in to discover more.

Air Miles Conversion

image.png

The CIMB Preferred Visa Infinite was the pioneer in CIMB’s lineup of credit cards to introduce a tier-based reward system. This system awards a significant number of Bonus Points once a certain monthly spending threshold is met.

While this approach has since been adopted by the newly revamped CIMB Visa Infinite and CIMB Visa Signature, it was actually first implemented by the CIMB Preferred Visa Infinite.

However, unlike the multiple tiers offered by the CIMB Visa Infinite, the CIMB Preferred Visa Infinite features just one tier for cumulative spending. Spending at least RM10,000 per month will earn you an additional 35,000 Bonus Points.

On the other hand, any amount less than RM10,000 will not qualify for these additional Bonus Points. For example, if you spend RM9,999, you will still accumulate the standard Bonus Points for that amount but will miss out on the bonus bulk of 35,000 Bonus Points.

image.png

As demonstrated, the CIMB Preferred Visa Infinite offers a significant 0.92 miles per ringgit (MPR) assuming you meet the RM10,000 monthly threshold for dining.

Naturally, this is an ideal scenario. Realistically, it’s unlikely you’d spend RM10,000 solely on dining each month, unless you’re a business owner or have a large family that frequently enjoys weekend outings. Therefore, it’s more practical to consider this card under ‘Optimistic’ and ‘Realistic’ scenarios. These scenarios account for the fact that while a substantial portion of your monthly expenditure might be on dining, other categories will contribute to exceeding the RM10,000 threshold, thus earning you the bonus 35,000 Bonus Points.

Personally, if your dining expenses are below RM4,000, I would recommend considering other options such as the UOB Visa Infinite or the Standard Chartered Journey instead. This is because the major benefits of the CIMB Preferred Visa Infinite might be underutilized in such cases.

An important consideration and limitation of this tiered bonus points system is that certain merchant categories have spending caps, likely implemented to prevent manipulation of the points earning system. Remarkably, these caps are set at RM5,000, which is quite generous.

However, dining expenses are exempt from these caps, allowing for the potential to earn 0.92 miles per ringgit (MPR) if the card is used solely for dining each month. This also means that spending over RM5,000 on dining counts fully towards the RM10,000 monthly threshold required to earn the 35,000 bulk bonus points.

It’s important to note that even if spending RM10,000 per month is not feasible for many, the CIMB Preferred Visa Infinite is far from ineffective. With dining expenses alone, the card offers a baseline of 0.64 MPR, which exceeds the rates provided by other popular dining credit cards like the UOB Visa Infinite, UOB Privilege Banking Visa Infinite, and Standard Chartered Journey, to name a few.

While this rate is specific to Enrich miles, the CIMB Preferred Visa Infinite competes well with its peers across various airline loyalty programs and offers unique conversion options exclusive to CIMB.

One of the standout features of CIMB’s Bonus Points system is that points earned across different CIMB credit cards are pooled together. This is particularly advantageous if you already possess a CIMB Travel credit card and are considering adding the CIMB Preferred Visa Infinite to your wallet; you won’t have to start accumulating points from scratch.

For instance, if you hold a CIMB Travel World Elite card, you can enjoy the best of both worlds: capitalize on the dining spend benefits of the CIMB Preferred Visa Infinite and the overseas and airline spending benefits of the CIMB Travel World Elite, which earns you 0.8 MPR.

This synergistic approach maximizes your rewards from various spending categories efficiently.

Special Deep Dive: Conditions Galore!

By now, you can tell that the CIMB Preferred Visa Infinite is a top performer in several categories. Since January 2024, it has been my go-to card for local spending. However, it’s important to note that the CIMB Preferred Visa Infinite comes with several stipulations, including a required RM250,000 in Assets Under Management (AUM) to qualify.

In my view, CIMB has intentionally imposed these conditions to ensure their profit margins. Several readers have mentioned that some of these conditions feel excessive, leading them to opt for simpler credit cards, such as the UOB Visa Infinite. Let’s delve deeper into these conditions.

image.png

Firstly, the terms and conditions for the CIMB Preferred Visa Infinite state:

“Cardholders earn 1X Bonus Points on local spending and 2X Bonus Points on overseas spending. An additional 7X Bonus Points for local dining spend and an additional 6X Bonus Points for overseas spending (‘Additional Bonus Points’) are awarded on a quarterly basis to cardholders who maintain the minimum AUM balance required in the CIMB Preferred Terms & Conditions throughout the Campaign Period. Additional Bonus Points are capped at 1,000,000 per cardholder each calendar month.”

This essentially means that your bonus points from the CIMB Preferred Visa Infinite are only posted quarterly. If you need to redeem miles urgently for travel, this delay could be a significant drawback, given the limited availability of air tickets. The second stipulation states that the additional bonus points are capped at 1 million points per month for each cardholder, which should not be a major issue unless your monthly spending exceeds RM100,000.

image.png

Furthermore, the CIMB Preferred Visa Infinite offers a tiered bonus structure, awarding 35,000 Bonus Points upon meeting a specific spending threshold of RM10,000. There are three conditions for qualifying for this bulk bonus. First, you must spend at least RM10,000 per month. Second, you need to maintain a minimum of RM250,000 AUM at all times.

Third, CIMB requires that you “Maintain a minimum monthly average balance of RM50,000 in CIMB’s Current and/or Savings Account (‘CASA/-i’) as part of the minimum RM250,000 AUM balance requirement”.

This means maintaining at least RM50,000 in your bank accounts at all times during the campaign period, which lasts until 30 September 2024.

In conclusion, understanding these conditions is crucial before considering the CIMB Preferred Visa Infinite. As someone deeply integrated into the CIMB ecosystem, I find these conditions manageable and continue to use the CIMB Preferred Visa Infinite as my primary card for local spending. However, if you find any of these stipulations challenging, it’s essential to weigh the pros and cons of this card against other available options that may not have such stringent requirements.

Airport Lounge Access

I know how important it is to obtain information about lounge access at a glance, so if you're queuing up to enter a lounge in Malaysia, here's the important details about the CIMB Preferred Visa Infinite credit card:

  • Number of Lounge Access Passes: 8X per year

  • Spend Conditions: No spend conditions

  • Supplementary Access: Yes.

I've compiled the list of eligible lounges you can access in Malaysia. Lounge Access List by CIMB Visa Infinite credit card in Malaysia:

CIMB may update its list from time to time, so be sure to check out their list here if you don't see your lounge on the list above.

The CIMB Preferred Visa Infinite offers outstanding lounge access, comparable to that of the CIMB Travel World Elite. Cardholders enjoy eight entries per year to the Plaza Premium First at KLIA Terminal 1 Main Terminal Building.

Utilizing these visits at the Plaza Premium First lounge represents the best use of the CIMB Preferred Visa Infinite, as this lounge surpasses most others in terms of exclusivity and luxury. However, some notable exceptions include a few exceptional Plaza Premium Lounges located around the world.

Final Thoughts

The CIMB Preferred Visa Infinite stands out in the premium credit card arena, especially for those who can meet its RM10,000 monthly spending threshold. Its tiered rewards system, particularly the generous bonus of 35,000 points for substantial dining expenditures, positions it as a top choice for high spenders, particularly business owners or large families.

This card isn’t just about dining, though; it excels in rewarding cumulative spend across various categories without the usual caps, except for a RM5,000 cap in some categories. Notably, all dining expenses contribute uncapped towards the monthly threshold, enhancing the potential for accumulating rewards.

An appealing feature of the CIMB credit cards, including the Preferred Visa Infinite, is the pooling of Bonus Points across different CIMB cards. This synergy allows cardholders who also own cards like the CIMB Travel World Elite to maximize their benefits across multiple spending categories, from local dining to overseas travel.

Moreover, the card’s lounge access is another significant perk. Offering eight entries to the luxurious Plaza Premium First at KLIA, it provides a sanctuary of comfort and luxury that few other lounges can match, aside from some standout Plaza Premium Lounges globally.

In conclusion, the CIMB Preferred Visa Infinite is an excellent choice for those who regularly spend heavily across various categories and value luxury travel perks. It offers a competitive edge with its unique rewards structure and the added benefit of point pooling, making it a versatile tool in any frequent traveler’s wallet
